Materials Used

Each piece of wood encapsulated in our products, from local to international woods, is acquired using responsible forest practices. Some of the wood is from our or our neighbors' properties and the tree was removed for safety reasons. The suppliers we work with use responsible forestry practices, including planned felling, a minimum tree diameter prior to removal, and a focus on regrowth. We DO NOT use endangered species for any product in our shop.

The Domestic Woods:
The woods listed below are used for an entire piece or is the main material in the fusion hook. Requests can be made for specific sizes or wood combinations by preorder.

Apple
The apple wood used in our products were purchased from an orchard on the Columbia Gorge. The colors range from light red and brown to deeper reds and browns. The apple tree is a medium to light strength wood, which makes it a little lighter to hold and work with. (We also purchased some delicious apples and cider on our tour of the Columbia Gorge Fruit Loop.)

Bamboo
Bamboo is a strong and fast growing plant, capable of growing three feet in one day. It is a sustainable material due to its ability to regenerate from its own roots, the small amount of water needed for growth and the lack of pesticides and fertilizer needed as it is resistant to pests and diseases.

Black/Honey Locust
The locust tree, native to North America, was acquired from a neighbor's property that had fallen during a wind storm. This hardwood is very durable and is a honey color. We stored, processed and dried the wood at our home for the past two years to be used in our creations.

Birdseye Maple
Birdseye maple is originally from Canada and the Eastern and Midwestern USA. This small portion of the maple tree is very distinctive in the wood grain, as it looks like eyes, thus the name. It is a lighter creme color, polishes beautifully, and is a joy to work with.

Flame Maple
The flame maple, also part of the maple tree, has a wavy and shimmery wood grain pattern and comes in a creamy color. This wood type has been used since Colonial days.

Myrtlewood
Myrtlewood is an incredibly colorful and unique hardwood found primarily on the coast in South Oregon and Northern California. The colors are influenced by the minerals within the soil and one tree can provide a plethora of color and grain patterns. Our supplier kiln dries all their Myrtlewood, gathered from fallen trees or from private owners. Each piece of myrtlewood is hand selected for quality, complex colors, and beauty.

Oak
The oak used in the hook designs was harvested from a tree we had to remove due to safety concerns. This unique and shimmering hardwood displays colors from a light brown to an rich dark brown. This wood was processed, dried, and stored at our home for the past two years in preparation to be made into beautiful pieces of art.

Blue Pine
Blue pine, or beetle kill blue pine, can be found in the USA and Canada. The name and blue-grey coloration of the wood is a result of the blue stain fungus that is spread to Ponderosa Pine and Lodgepole trees by the Mountain Pine Beetle. This fungi has no effect on humans, does not transfer from the wood, and does not impact the strength of the wood. The pine is considered a medium strength wood, and is lighter to hold in your hand while working.

Poplar
Poplar is typically found in the Eastern USA and Canada. This medium wood ranges in colors from a creamy white to an olive or brown heartwood. It is a lighter weight than some of the hardwood hooks and polishes beautifully.

Walnut
The black walnut in our creations is from a tree that had to be removed for safety reasons from our backyard. We stored, dried, and processed the wood and are proud of the beautiful pieces we are able to share with you. This hardwood can be in a variety of tones and shimmer, from a light caramel color to a very dark brown.

The International Woods:
The international woods are listed as an entire piece and can be found in some of the inlay pieces. We do not use wood in our products that is on the endangered list.

African Blackwood
The African Blackwood is native to Eastern Africa. This beautiful hardwood has colors ranging from rich dark brown to purple-ish streaks in the ebony heartwood. It is a very stable wood that polishes well; shining for years to come.

Chakte Viga
Chakte Viga is a hardwood found in the tropical areas of Mexico. The colors vary in gradients of orange and is lovely to work with. The colors can darken with UV exposure.

Katalox
Katalox is a hard and heavy wood native to Central America. The heartwood is found in colors ranging from dark brown to a bright purple or red, while the sapwood is a faded yellow or light tan color. Many of our hooks include heart and sapwood, displaying a stunning combination. Some katalox hooks have imperfections, or birthmarks, created from the insects that originally killed the tree. These only enhance the unique aspects of the piece and make it that much more fun to work with.

Leopardwood
Leopardwood is originally found in South America. This hardwood has a dark reddish-brown color with strong rays that are visible in each creation. The leopardwood is exquisite when polished and is lovely to work with.

Padauk
Padauk is originally from West Africa. This stunning wood can be found in colors ranging from orange to a crimson with purple tones. This is a stable and hearty wood that has stunning, vibrant colors with each polish and will shine for years to come.

Purpleheart
Purpleheart is originally from Central and South America. This unique wood is purple, ranging from dark to lighter purple shades, creating a stunning addition to our hooks. This hardwood polishes well and will shine for years to come.

Thuya Burl
Thuya is originally from Morocco and the oil from the tree was used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans in religious ceremonies. This tropical hardwood has a rich and luscious color, available in golden brown to nearly black. Little eyes can be found throughout the wood and are included on our crochet hooks.
